I studied medicine at the Medical University in Athens, Greece. Right after graduation, I joined Prof. Nikos Papadopoulos’ group starting my PhD in the Laboratory of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in the 2nd Pediatric Clinic of Athens.
During my PhD, I have been focused on the investigation of a possible relationship between a viral agent detected in the first episode of acute bronchiolitis in infancy and asthma development later on in early childhood.
Last year, I received the Median Term Research Fellowship from EAACI and I was transferred in Davos, Switzerland, working in Prof.Akdis’ group. Under the supervision of Nikos, Cezmi and Mubeccel, I tried to set up a model of T cell – epithelial cells’ supernatants “co culture “ mainly focusing on T naive cells’ differentiation patterns after exposure to rhinovirus-infected supernatants.
After moving back to Athens, I received the Long Term Research Fellowship from ERS (European Respiratory Society) and since July 2011 I am at Imperial College, working at Prof. Johnston’s group, in a triangle co operation between Athens, Davos and London.
During my short career, I have been really interested in developing and promoting co operation between scientists all over the world. Knowledge exchange can fill the scientific puzzle in a faster and easier way.
I feel deeply that EAACI JMAs and all types of junior scientists collaborations can help and promote not only the scientists’ careers but the research itself. I find myself really lucky taking the opportunity to represent the Infection and Allergy Interest Group and I hope I will do my best during the upcoming 2 years so as to make our interest group a fruitful combination of work and ideas.
JMA idea is nice to be served, especially by inspired scientists. I have been lucky to be mentored by most of them (Nikos, Cezmi, Mubeccel and Sebastian) and I hope I can expand some of the properties they dowered me.
