EAACI/GA2LEN Allergy SchoolLifestyle interventions in Allergy & Asthma
9 -12 September 2010
Costa Rei (Cagliari coast), Sardinia, Italy
Allergic diseases represent a major health problem with great impact on quality of life. Non-pharmacological treatment approaches in asthma that focus on manipulation of dietary and physical activity factors are of major interest, since they could potentially reduce the dose requirements of pharmacological medications and their side effects, and reduce the burden of the disease. Additionally, tackling sedentary lifestyle, preventing obesity and thereby enhancing health and well-being is currently a public health challenge with benefits further beyond allergic diseases.
The aim of this Summer School is to provide young physicians education and updates on the relationships between allergy, infections, life style, sport and nutrition and to stimulate the social contacts between young physicians from all over Europe interested in allergic diseases in children and adults.
Upon completion of this course participants should be able to: • Describe current hypotheses regarding the pathogenesis of exercise induced asthma/bronchoconstriction and of exercise induced hypersensitivity syndromes;
• Explain how asthma in elite athletes may differ from other forms of bronchospasm triggered by exercise;
• Discuss EIB/asthma data for athletes who competed in the Beijing Olympic Games and learn the guidelines for allergy treatment in professional and recreational athletes;
• Describe the therapeutic utility of nutrition, weight control and exercise in the treatment of asthma;

• Learn how to measure body composition.
